Jason - unless I am mis reading what you are stating as a problem with your kick stand - the issue you describe is not an electrical short rather that is exactly the way Suzuki designed it to operate .
Have a look at the hinge area of the kick stand and you will find a plunger switch - when you flip out the kick stand - the plunger opens a ground to the ignition and the bike will not run.
This is a safety feature - someone posted instructions on how to jumper past this last winter but I am not certain about who or when this was posted.
